What are they thinking?
I heard something that may be a rumor. The Regatta Royal Court (princesses and Queen to be picked) for this year are being shorted of their Special Activities because of the OREGON BICENTENIAL next year. Money that would normally be for the girls this year is being saved to make next year SPECIAL. NO FLOAT for parades (even Astoria's Regatta Parade). No money, time,or incentive to work on a float. The Regatta committee is "burned out".
What about these girls, this year?
The committee needs some changes!!

Astoria Bicentennial?
Did you mean Astoria instead of Oregon? It would seem strange to cut back on the oldest festival in the northwest during Astoria's birthday!

Oh I cannot imagine...
I know the Regatta committee and cannot imagine this would be true - in fact, their Regatta Spring Bingo is coming up on the 22nd at Suomi Hall!

My Mistake
I did mean the Astoria Bicentennial. Sorry. It would be nice to hear from someone on the committee to find out what the plan is for this year.

Say it isn't so?
No float? Cutting corners this year to make next year's bicentenniel bigger and better? I hope this is a rumor. We look forward to the Regatta every year and it would be a shame for the committee to be cutting corners on this event.

The scoop
No, there won't be a float, but the court will be riding in great cars. It costs an incredible amount of money to put on this festival and to be able to provide scholarships. I work with several local organizations, and donors and sponsors have cut back pretty drastically - none of the events are getting the scope of donations that they've previously received.
If Regatta had to cut back on anything, the float makes sense to me more than cutting out events. It has nothing to do with next year, either.

What Would It Take?
I talked with Dan Arnoth who is the President of the Regatta Association this year. He tells me that they lost a big sponsor just for this year and that sponsor will likely return in 2011. That means the association is short about 20-grand this year and the float just wasn't possible to do as a result. He said if anyone has that 20-thousand dollars laying around and threw it his way he could make the float work this year.
